Let's meet with Malcom McKinnon, a young rider with a lot of talent!

Malcom McKinnon, you won in your category 17- and finished second on the AM overall podium. Can you tell us when did you start racing at FMSQ?
I started racing FMSQ in 2018.

What is your experience with dirt bikes riding?
I love riding dirt bikes and it’s taken me so many places that I would have never gone and met so many people as well.

Next season, you will step up to the Junior category. What are your main objectives?
This season I’m looking to get top 5 every race. I think that’s a good goal.

Will you be a confident rookie (laughs)?
I feel pretty confident after winning a championship and 2nd overall in the overall race.

Is there one thing technique-wise you feel is a weaker point and that you want to work on?
I think a weak point for me is my strength. It gets hard to hold onto a big bike after a while.

Talking about big bikes... You are riding a Sherco 300SE, what do you like the most on this bike?
I’m riding a 2021 Sherco and I love everything about this bike and its characteristics. It handles so well in the bush, it’s unbelievable.

What kind of personal settings are you doing on the bike to have it to your liking?
I keep the bike at pretty much stock settings. It’s all the stock suspension and all I do is change some lever positions and ride it!

What rider are you looking up to in the FMSQ and internationally?
I look up to Phil Chainé and Alex Gougeon the most, watching them ride is incredible. I really look up to Kailub Russel, Stew Baylor and Joseph Garcia internationally.

On the gate, what do you do to get rid of the departure stress?
I can never seem to get rid of the stress on the start line until the flag drops! It stays with me and it gets really tough to do everything right.

What is the best ride you ever had during your last championship?
My best ride would be probably be the Casselman race. I was dealing with a concussion, bruised ribs and almost unbearable pain and still won my race and the overall, but my best personal ride would be Saint-Michel-des-Saints. I rode my best there out of the whole season and had a blast, the deep sand is always my favourite, that’s why SMDS is my favourite track.

Where do you practise the most to get your seat time?
I have a moto track and an enduro track at home that I ride all the time.

What do you do off season?
I go in the gym all the time and ride the bikes on studs wherever I can in the snow.

In your family are there other members riding?
My dad and my two brothers race in FMSQ.

Who gave you the passion for riding?
My dad got me into riding when I was three years old on a PW 50 and I never stopped from there.

J'ai commencé à courir à la FMSQ en 2018.

Quelle est ton expérience avec la conduite de motos hors-route?
J'adore faire du bike et cela m'a emmené dans tellement d'endroits que je ne serais jamais allé et j'ai rencontré plein de gens aussi.

L'année prochaine, tu passeras en catégorie Junior. Quels sont tes principaux objectifs?
Cette saison, je cherche à atteindre le top 5 à chaque course, je pense que c'est un bon objectif.

Seras-tu une recrue confiante?
Je me sens assez confiant après avoir remporté un championnat et été 2e au général au classement général.

Sur le plan technique, y a-t-il une chose qui, selon toi, est un point plus faible et sur lequel tu aimerais travailler?
Je pense que mon point faible est ma force. Il  devient difficile de tenir un gros bike au bout d'un moment.

En parlant de gros bike... Tu roules en Sherco 300SE. Qu'est-ce que tu aimes le plus de cette moto?
Je conduis la Sherco 2021, j'aime tout sur cette  moto et ses caractéristiques. Elle se comporte si bien dans le bois que c'est incroyable.

Quel genre de réglages personnels fais-tu sur la moto pour l'avoir à ton goût?
Je garde le bike à peu près aux réglages d'origine avec toute la suspension d'origine et tout ce que je fais, c'est changer certaines positions de leviers et hop, je roule!

Quel coureurs sont inspirants pour toi à la FMSQ, et à l'international?
J'admire le plus Phil Chainé et Alex Gougeon, les regarder rouler est incroyable. J'admire vraiment aussi Kailub Russel, Stew Baylor et Joseph Garcia.

Aux départs, que fais-tu pour te débarrasser du stress?
Je n'arrive jamais à me débarrasser du stress sur la ligne de départ jusqu'à ce que le drapeau tombe, ça reste avec moi et il devient vraiment difficile de tout faire correctement.

Quelle est la meilleure course que tu as faite pendant ton dernier championnat?
Ma meilleure course serait probablement la course de Casselman, j'avais une commotion cérébrale, des côtes contusionnées et une douleur presque insupportable et j'ai quand même gagné ma course et l'ovderall du matin, mais ma meilleure course personnellement était à Saint-Michel des Saints. J'ai fait de mon mieux et je me suis éclaté là-bas. Le sable profond est toujours mon truc préféré!

Où pratiques-tu le plus pour faire du temps de pilotage?
J'ai une piste de moto et une piste d'enduro à la maison sur laquelle je roule tout le temps.

Que fais-tu pendant la période hors-saison?
Je vais tout le temps au gymnase et je fais du bike avec des crampons partout où je peux dans la neige.

Qui t'a donné la passion du Cross-Country?
Mon père m'a fait essayer la moto quand j'avais trois ans sur un PW 50 et je n'ai jamais arrêté à partir de là!
